Middlesex
The Middlesex legend made his professional debut with Middlesex in 2010, topping the averages with 36 wickets at 19. Since then he has been a key fixture in the team, having taken over 600 wickets for Middlesex across all formats during his time at the club. Toby is entering his 15th season with Middlesex CCC, continuing to provide value to the club in his role as Captain of red ball cricket, which he was appointed ahead of the 2023 season.
Background
He has risen through the Middlesex ranks predominantly as a batsman, starting with the Under 10s in 1998, where he had an outstanding knock of 189*. It wasn’t until university where Toby played for the Leeds Bradford MCC team, that his focus turned to bowling and grabbed the attention of Angus Fraser.
2016
Notably Roland-Jones sealed the 2016 County Championship with a surprise hattrick, ending Middlesex’s 23 year wait for the trophy. Dismissing, Ryan Sidebottom by flattening his leg stump, to end up with 6-54 for the innings, and 10 in the match. The 2016 season also saw Roland-Jones’s first call up to the England squad, and he was named one of Wisden’s cricketers of the year following the stand out year.
England
Toby made his England debut in 2017 against South Africa in both One Day and Test Match cricket, taking a five wicket haul in his first Test match innings 5/57 and averaging less than 20 in his 4 matches, (dismissing Hashim Amla on each occasion). He was the first Englishman to take a 5-fer on debut since Adil Rashid in 2015.
